Wyrling Character Guide
WARNING! This list contains spoilers for The Wyrforra Wars, Book 1: Wyrforra. If you haven’t read Wyrforra yet, DON’T READ THIS PAGE! Go to the Book 1 Character Guide page, and save yourself from the spoilers. This is a companion list for Wyrling. Don’t read it if you haven’t finished Wyrforra yet! (And don’t read it if you just started Wyrling, because it’s more fun to meet these characters in the book first– in my opinion, anyway.) SPOILER WARNING for WYRFORRA! The Resistance: Calla – (pronounced like calla lilies) – As the daughter of two Resistance heroes, 18-year-old Calla has a lot on her shoulders. She keeps her black hair chin-length and brushed over her right eye, so only her pine-green left eye is visible. She’s tough, no-nonsense, and determined to live up to the reputation her parents once had. She’s got two knives and she knows how to use them– really, really well. Sam – (yep, just “Sam”) – Sweet, kind Sam has been working under his doctor father’s tutelage to learn how to heal. He is responsible for the health of a small village– which is a lot for an 18-year-old. Sam has short, wavy brown hair and a peculiar set of mismatched eyes– his left eye is yellow, while the right is gray. He’s never seen without his medical bag and fresh dirt on his running shoes. Daire – (pronounced like “dare”) – Daire is in his forties during the events of Wyrling, but the past two decades haven’t slowed him down at all– at least, not physically. As half of a team, Daire is lost and lonely… but more determined than ever to protect those he cares about. After he finds them. Robin – (pronounced like the bird) – Seven years before the beginning of Wyrling, Robin left on a scouting mission to a Wyrforra settlement. She has yet to return. Port – (I’m sure you can figure this one out.) – Big things have happened to Port since the Resistance moved. While Cap is still technically in charge, the task of actually running the Resistance falls to Port. Fiercely loyal to his friends and cause, Port is the hardest working person in the Resistance (except perhaps Dr. Hanson). Cap – (short for “Captain”) – The final battle at the Fort has left Cap unable to walk, but the fire of battle still burns bright in him. Cap directs the entire Resistance from his wheelchair (which Port dutifully maneuvers around the Camp), and makes sure the decisions of the Seven are carried out. Somehow, he has grown even more cantankerous. Dr. Hanson – (“HAN-sen”) – If Dr. Hanson looks older after twenty years, she certainly does not act it. The tough-as-nails doctor is as busy as ever keeping the Resistance on their feet. The Seven – The Seven are the ruling body of the Resistance. They are carefully chosen to represent all the people of the Resistance, warriors and civilians from all demographics, to make decisions that will keep everyone safe from the Wyrforra– if they can. As the members of the Seven retire or (more likely) perish, others are judiciously selected to fill their shoes. At the time of Wyrling, the Seven are: Daire – See above. Robin – See above. Cap – See above. Port – See above. Dr. Hanson – See above. Nico – (“NEE-co”) – Nico’s soft smile and dark eyes make people instinctually trust him. When Nico was abandoned as a child, Aris Wisteria of the Seven took him in and mentored him, treating Nico as her son and grooming him to lead. When Aris fell in battle, Nico took her place among the Seven. He is in his mid-twenties, but wise far beyond his years. Delphine – (“del-FEEN”) – Like Nico, Delphine is one of the youngest members of the Seven at 24. Fortunately, her mentor is Naveen, who has passed his knowledge and thoughtfulness onto his young student. Delphine’s hazel eyes, framed under wavy blonde hair, reflect her teacher’s desire to guide the Resistance down the right path. Wyrforra: Odyra Warringgate – (“oh-DIE-ruh”) – In the time since Wyrforra, Odyra has gone from being the King’s semi-trusted servant to the Minister of Communication for the Wyrforra’s American colony. In other words, Odyra controls all the information in the country– and, by extension, the people. While High King Erenvyr is still the legitimate monarch, some may be beginning to wonder who really holds all the power. High King Erenvyr – (“AIR-en-veer”) – The years have not been kind to the old Wyrforra ruler. The High King is slowly losing his vision, hearing, and is wheel-chair bound– so he relies on Odyra to act in his interest. The King has also gotten paranoid in his decline, and there are those in the Wyrforra command centers who whisper rumors that he’s losing his mind… which makes the question of succession an important and timely one. Picasso – (pronounced like the artist) – Picasso is a reclusive old Cat who lives alone deep in the forest. No one knows why besides him, and he’d rather forget. Avrryce – (pronounced like “avarice”) – One of Odyra’s highly trained special guards, Avrryce would follow her mistress’s words to the grave. Glyrr – (“GLEER”) – As the other half of Odyra’s specialized unit, Glyrr is responsible for carrying out her orders and keeping Avrryve alive. Dyla Warringgate – (“DIE-lah”) – Odyra’s mother and a renowned war hero before her death, Dyla is remembered fondly by the Wyrforra– or at least, most of them. Others: Ben – (just “Ben.” This one’s easy.) – Ben’s friends call him “Big Ben,” or they would, if his imposing figure and booming voice didn’t scare them all away. Ben travels the country in a modified school bus with his three most important treasures– his children. Tiger – (pronounced like the animal) – Tiger is Ben’s biggest son. Despite being only 17, he has his father’s mass, with huge shoulders and long legs, and short curly black hair on his not-quite-overlarge head. However, Tiger’s personality could not be more different than his father’s; Tiger is shy, sweet, helpful, and always ready to smile. Complications with his birth left him deaf, but he can read lips, and his siblings can understand him with nothing more than a glance. Tiger carries a backpack into battle, filled with– well, who knows? Eggs? Kittens? Hand grenades? There could be anything in there. Cal – (pronounced like it’s short for “Calvin,” even though it’s not.) – Cal did not get his brother’s and father’s build; he’s the smallest of his siblings, short and skinny, with thick glasses and his black hair kept a little long and shaggy. Don’t let his size fool you– he’s extremely quick in a fight. Despite being half the size of Tiger (and the same age), Cal is very protective of his brother, acting as his voice when people don’t understand the gentle giant. His name is not short for Calvin, but he wishes it was. Bandit – (“BAND-it”– you know this one.) – Ben’s only daughter, Bandit is the most lethal of her siblings. She keeps her braided hair pulled tightly in a ponytail, and she’s rarely seen without a smirk. Her top priority is her family’s safety, from the Wyrforra and from themselves. She’s smart, agile, tough, strong, and an all-around killing machine– impressive for a seventeen-year-old. Thanks to Bandit, no one has threatened her brothers and lived to tell about it. The Mad Cat – He’s back, and crazier than ever. Living in the woods for 20 years has affected the old Cat in some unusual ways. Has he gone further down the path of madness, or has he stumbled across some ancient truths written in the stars by his Wyrforra ancestors? Probably just the madness… but, you never know… Maria – (“mah-REE-uh”) – How a human came to work for the Wyrforra Minister of Communication, we may never know. We do know that before the war, Maria worked as a makeup artist in Hollywood.
